Hello — I'm Roland

I build for the web and write about how things work.

Learning the platform from the ground up — HTML, CSS, and JavaScript written by hand. This site is my notebook and practice ground.

Skills

What I work with

The core tools and browser standards I rely on.

HTML

Semantic structure, proper heading order, accessible landmark regions, and valid native elements before reaching for ARIA.

CSS

Modern Flexbox and Grid layouts, CSS custom properties for theming, fluid typography with clamp(), and logical properties.

JavaScript

Plain vanilla JS for progressive enhancement — menus, observers, and subtle interactions. The site remains fully usable with scripts off.

Accessibility

Keyboard paths that actually work, visible focus styles, WCAG AA contrast compliance, and respecting prefers-reduced-motion.

Git & Static Hosting

Atomic commits with descriptive rationale. Plain static deployment without bundler or framework overhead.

Things I've built to understand how the web works under the hood.

DevDrift

This site. A rebuild of my first attempt — the one that taught me why a hamburger menu needs a real button. Hand-written HTML, CSS and about a hundred lines of JavaScript. No dependencies, no build step, deployable by dragging a folder somewhere.

The next one is taking shape. Rather than pad this page with placeholders, I'd rather it stay empty until there's something real to put here.

I'm always happy to compare notes, review a beginner's project, or explain something badly twice until it lands.
